Beware of feeding your dog chocolate! Many people don’t realise that chocolate is actually toxic to dogs, especially dark chocolate. Chocolate contains methylxanthines, including theobromide and caffeine, with the highest concentrations found in dark chocolate or cocoa beans. These toxins are rapidly absorbed by the gut, then are processed in the liver, before being excreted by the kidneys.
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased thirst and urination, with a rapid heart rate and breathing rate. These symptoms may progress to seizures and collapse.
If you know or suspect chocolate poisoning please contact your vet., your dog may be kept in the hospital for observation and treatment.
