Some cat owners may have noticed adverts recently promoting a microchip operated cat flap. We think these are a brilliant idea and mean only your own cat can enter your house!
Unwanted feline intruders through the cat flap can make your own cat nervous or aggressive, and very rarely do they appear to actually welcome visitors. Cats are naturally solitary creatures and are very particular about their own personal space. If your cat feels particularly stressed, it may start unwanted behaviours such as spraying in the house, as a way of reinforcing their own territory.
Cat flaps are obviously ideal for many homes as their cats can come and go as they please, usually at night. However you don't want any cat coming and going, so there are several options to help this. Some cat flaps are operated by a magnetic collar, some by infrared collars, but to avoid injuries caused by wearing a collar, new cat flaps are available which only open upon detecting your cat's microchip.
Most cats and dogs are microchipped routinely as kittens and puppies, either at their first injections, 6 month health checks, or at neutering. It is a quick injection which implants a small polymer tube containing the chip into the scruff of the neck. Microchipping means if your pet is lost or stolen, you can be contacted if your pet is found and scanned by a rescue centre or Vet Practice.
