Oral Care Month for Dogs March 2010.
Oral Care Month - March 2010.
Merlin Veterinary Group are teaming up with Pedigree Dentastix to educate owners on the importance of regular dental care for their dogs. We are able to offer FREE Dental Health Checks at our practice and will advise owners the best oral care for their pet. Owners will receive a FREE pack of Dentastix at the end of the consultation. Regular dental care for your dog includes brushing of teeth (see a factsheet on How To Brush Your Dogs Teeth on the Pets page of our website!), and providing dental chews, such as Pedigree Dentastix.
Dental chews have been shown to reduce plaque accumulation by up to 60% and tartar accumulation by 80%. Gum disease starts when harmful bacteria coat the teeth, forming a white sticky layer called plaque. If plaque is not removed it forms a hard brown coating called tartar. Tartar can only be removed under General Anaesthesia by a Vet. during a scale and polish. If tartar is not attended to, gums will become very painful and inflamed and can start to recede exposing the roots of teeth. This leads to loosening and infection of the roots and painful abscesses will form. The only treatment at this stage is most likely the extraction of rotten teeth.
We would like owners to be aware of these problems and to start checking their dogs mouth regularly, and hopefully avoid painful gums and teeth in the future. If toothbrushing is impossible in your pet, dental chews are a good start, and regular scale and polish under Anaesthesia will remove mild tartar before it has chance to affect teeth too badly. (Please note any treatments we carry out as a result of a free consultation are chargable as normal.)
