Brushing your Pets Teeth

Perseverance and patience are the ingredients needed to be successful, some toothpaste and a brush might also be useful!!

Week 1 - Start by examining your pets mouth regularly, lift the gums and examine all of the teeth, including those at the back of the mouth. Then give a treat as a reward.

Week 2 - Wipe a small amount of pet toothpaste onto the gums and allow your pet to lick it off. Then give a treat as a reward.

Week 3 - Using the brush wipe the toothpaste over the teeth without trying to clean them. Then give a treat as a reward.

Week 4 - Using the brush and toothpaste, clean the teeth using circular motions. Pay particular attention to the outer surface of the upper teeth, as this is the area where most of the problems occur. Then give a treat as a reward.

THE ABOVE PROCEDURE ALLOWS YOUR PET TO BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO ONE THING AT A TIME. GIVE PLENTY OF PRAISE AFTER EACH SESSION AND DON'T TRY TO DO TOO MUCH TOO QUICKLY.

There are a variety of toothpastes available, ask in your branch for the latest recommendation.
